Zelensky honors Ukraine’s hero mine-sniffing dog Patron with a medal for war service.

Since the start of the war, Patron has been credited with detecting over 200 explosives. At a ceremony in Kyiv on Sunday, the Ukrainian President presented the medal to the Jack Russell terrier and his owner, Myhailo Iliev, a major in the Civil Protection Service, in recognition of their efforts.

The audience laughed as the tiny pooch barked and wagged his tail as his owner was presented with the award.

During the war, the two-and-a-half-year-old dog has become a symbol of Ukrainian patriotism.

Patron was described by Mr Zelensky as a “wonderful little sapper.”

“Today, I want to honor those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines,” the Ukrainian president said.

“And, alongside our heroes, Patron, a wonderful little sapper who not only helps to neutralize explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where mines are a threat.”

Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, was also present and patted his pockets as if looking for treats.
