The Commodore 64 version of Empire Strikes Back is a new free Star Wars game.

Today is Star Wars Day, so why not celebrate by downloading a free Star Wars game that is brand new and was created on a classic system like the Commodore 64? It’s called Empire Strikes Back, and it’s a side-scrolling shooter based on Parker Brothers’ eponymous title for the Atari 2600, which was released forty years ago, and in which many will recognize Minterian echoes (except for the fact that the good Jeff replaced the AT-AT with giant camels).

The player is tasked with defending the rebel base on the planet Hoth, specifically the generators, where he must destroy AT-STs, AT-ATs, and drones aboard a snow speeder, according to Megastyle. Let’s take a look at some gameplay footage:

Empire Strikes Back offers a good challenge with its eight levels of increasing difficulty. The technical execution is also noteworthy, with three levels of parallax in the background and excellent sprites detail.

Empire Strikes Bаck is аvаilаble for downloаd on if you’re interested. There аre severаl formаts to choose from: cаssette, disc, аnd аuto-plаy, the lаtter for those who don’t wаnt to deаl with emulаtors. It’s worth noting thаt the disc аnd cаssette versions cаn be plаyed on reаl hаrdwаre аs well.
