Sinn Fein is set to defeat the DUP in a historic nationalist shift in Northern Ireland’s election.

If polls are correct, Sinn Fein will be the first nationalist party to hold the position of First Minister, but they will need the support of the largest Unionist party to form a government. Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the DUP’s leader, has stated that his party will only join a power-sharing government in Stormont if other parties agree that the Northern Ireland Protocol must be repealed or replaced. During a leaders’ debate between the five major political parties, Sir Jeffrey accused his nationalist rivals of plotting to hold a unification referendum, Sinn Fein accused the DUP of refusing to accept the democratic outcome of the election.
