Iain Duncan Smith has dismissed Brussels’ protests over the British government’s plans to change the Northern Ireland Protocol. Mr Duncan Smith was speaking to members of Parliament afterForeign Secretary Liz Truss announced her intention to introduce legislation in the coming weeks that would overwrite parts of the post-Brexit agreement.
‘The powerful article referred to by Lord Trimble, one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement, makes it very clear that the maintenance of the Good Friday Agreement trumps everything else,’ Mr Duncan-Smith told MPs.
“To that extent, it would be helpful if those on the other side who are banging on about this at the moment knew if they read, but if they read the protocol, article 13.8 makes it absolutely clear that the protocol can be changed in whole or in part through negotiation.”
“The point is that my right honourable friend was absolutely correct.
“In that protocol, the EU now needs to step up and do what article 13.8 says.”
