Ncuti Gatwa will play the fourteenth Doctor in the British television series Doctor Who. She will then succeed Jodie Whittaker, who played the Doctor for 32 episodes. Gatwa rose to prominence following the success of his Netflix series Sex Education, and he is the first black person to play the Doctor in the BBC series’ nearly sixty-year history.
During Whittaker’s series, another Black Doctor, played by the actor, appeared in several episodes. Despite this, Jo Martin was cast as a supporting character. In this case, we’re discussing the primary role.
Aside from Sex Education, Gatwa played Demetrius in a theatrical reduction of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was performed at London’s Globe Theater. He’ll also appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film in an unspecified role.
The first season of Doctor Who starring Gatwa is set to premiere in 2023, following the dramatic finale of the previous season with Whittaker.
