Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced plans to table the Northern Ireland protocol in an attempt to get parts of the deal that put the “Good Friday” agreement “under strain” scrapped.
“The Northern Ireland protocol does not have the necessary support in one part of the community in Northern Ireland,” Ms Truzz said.
However, Maros Sefcovic, vice-president of the European Commission, has criticized her plan and warned that Brussels could retaliate.
“Should the UK decide to move forward with a bill disapplying constitutive elements of the protocol, as the UK Government announced today, the EU will need to respond with all measures at its disposal,” he said.
“Our overarching goal is to find joint solutions within the protocol’s framework.” This is the only way to give people and businesses in Northern Ireland legal certainty and predictability.
“Practical issues arising from the protocol’s implementation in Northern Ireland can be resolved with political will and commitment.”
“The Europeаn Commission is prepаred to continue plаying its role, аs it hаs done since the beginning.”
