Sir Keir Starmer’s promise to resign if Durham police fined him for breaking lockdown rules was questioned by Labour’s Shadow Attorney General. Ms Thornberry defended her party’s leader following an April gathering at which Sir Keir was photographed drinking beer and eating curry. Sir Keir gave a speech on Monday in which he offered to resign as Leader of the Opposition if the police investigating the incident fined him.
Ms Thornberry stated on the BBC that she does not believe Sir Keir will be fined.
“I told him that there is no way that you have committed any crime,” she told BBC News.
“You haven’t broken any rules; you simply ate because we don’t live on thin air and you were out campaigning and needed to eat.”
