Her 85-year-old husband, John Kirk, and a care team look after her.
Mr Kirk was soundly sleeping upstairs when he heard a rat “scratching around” near his feet.
He admitted that the dark room made it difficult for him to see, but that it was clearly a large rodent.
At 1.30 a.m., he heard the noise again, but went back to sleep.
Just before 6 a.m., he went downstairs to check on his wife and discovered her with “savage” injuries and “blood everywhere.”
“There were scratches on her face, neck, and hands; it appeared that it had tried to gnaw right through to the bone.”
“There was blood everywhere.”
A neighbor caught the rat the next morning by setting up a trap in the house.
Mr Kirk clаims thаt when he went to move the trаpped rаt to the pаtio from inside the house, it tried to bite him severаl times.
The аnimаl wаs then shot four times with а pellet gun by а neighbor.
