Mariupol has been under constant bombardment for months, wreaking havoc on the city’s infrastructure.
Since the onslaught began, Ukraine claims tens of thousands of people have been killed.
Ukraine’s military forces announced on Tuesday that they were evacuating all troops remaining in the Black Sea port city from their final stronghold, leaving Vladimir Putin’s forces in command.
Despite the fact that this is Ukraine’s most significant defeat in the war so far, those who have held out since February have been hailed as “heroes.”
The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ General Staff stated that the garrison stationed in the city “has completed its combat mission.”
The “supreme military command ordered the commanders of the units stationed at Azovstal to save the lives of the personnel,” they said in a statement.
“Defenders of Mariupol are the heroes of our time,” the statement said, paying tribute to those who had been wounded while fighting for the city.
