As the overlap with the EU grows, NATO will become ‘European NATO’: ‘Won’t be independent’


The confirmation by Finland and Sweden that they will apply for NATO membership will boost the EU’s standing in the international military alliance, according to the former European leader. The two countries formally applied for NATO membership this week, leaving Ireland, Austria, Malta, and Cyprus as the only EU member states not in the alliance.

“I believe what we will most likely see is a more European NATO, rather than more independent, European strategic autonomy,” Mr Stubb told Politico.
